Around the world, 1 in every 700 children is born with a cleft. While surgery can take as little as 45 minutes & costs as little as $250, it is unaffordable for many in India. Five-year-old Pinki's family also cannot afford to correct her cleft lip. Forced out of school due to the stigma attached to her condition, Pinki and other kids like her lead ostracized lives. This stands to change when her parents meet a social worker who gathers patients for a hospital that offers free cleft lip surgeries to thousands of children each year, through the Smile Train program.
